There’s no magic formula for reducing fuel consumption, just a few simple things you can do.
A European survey of 5700 people revealed that 76 percent don’t regularly check their tyre pressures, 38 percent leave roof-top storage units in place, 18 percent don’t shop around for the best fuel prices and 17 percent leave unnecessary items in the car.
These four sins are liable to increase fuel consumption substantially – removing the roof-top cargo box could cut consumption by as much as 20 percent, shopping around by seven percent, regularly checking of tyre pressures and maintaining them at the optimum pressure, four percent and removing surplus items from inside the car, two percent.
Other tricks to reduce fuel consumption include travelling at a slower speed and using the most economical route for the journey. Seventy-one percent of drivers polled admitted to breaking speed limits, 42 percent don’t take the most economical route, 39 percent drive aggressively and 14 percent leave the air conditioning on all the time.
The survey also revealed that after filling the tank, 45 percent of people make an impulse purchase at the counter. So remove roof-top storage boxes and roof racks, check your tyre pressures, remove unnecessary stuff from inside the car, shop around for the best fuel price, and resist the impulse to add a chocolate bar to the bill.
Simple really.
