Mercedes-AMG launches first EV production model

ACCORDING TO MERCEDES-AMG, the launch of its first-ever series production model to be powered by a fully electric drivetrain is the beginning of “a new era”.

The landmark Mercedes-AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is available to order now, with first customer deliveries commencing today at Mercedes-EQ showrooms.

The luxurious yet sporty EQS 53 marks the introduction of high-voltage electrification to the Mercedes-AMG range in Australia. Some combustion engine-driven models are set to receive performance-focused plug-in hybrid systems while others, such as the EQS 53, completely substitute fuel-driven combustion for all the advantages of full electrification. These include instantaneous accelerative torque and optimised weight distribution.

Tailor-made for enthusiasts

“The AMG EQS 53 4MATIC+ is the first all-electric ambassador in the performance segment, made in Affalterbach,” says Philipp Schiemer, Chairman of the Board of Management of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH. “It is tailor-made for car enthusiasts who are looking for a combination of innovative electric mobility in a luxurious ambience, coupled with sportiness and agile driving dynamics.

“In addition, the EQS 53 is further proof that Mercedes-Benz is consistently driving electrification forward with all its brands as well. Further all-electric AMG models will follow in the not-too-distant future, also on our AMG.EA platform developed entirely in-house.”

Jochen Hermann, Chief Technical Officer of Mercedes‑AMG GmbH, says its all-electric models will deliver on the AMG brand promise. “Our customers can also look forward to a dynamic and emotional driving experience in this area. We ensure this with AMG-specific solutions, particularly when it comes to the drive system, suspension, brakes and, above all, sound.”

Is it just us, or does this remarkably like a recent Genesis model?

High output, no emissions

At the heart of the new EQS 53 4MATIC+ is a performance-oriented electric drivetrain with two motors; one each at the front and rear axles. Fully variable AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive optimally transmits power to the road in all driving conditions. As standard, the EQS 53 achieves an impressive maximum total power output of 484 kW and maximum torque of 950 Nm. The optional AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package increases output to a maximum of 560 kW in RACE START mode with boost function, matched by torque of 1020 Nm.

In this mode, acceleration from 0-100 km/h is possible in as little as 3.4 seconds (3.8 seconds in standard specification). Top speed is limited to 250 km/h with AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package fitted (220 km/h as standard).

The EQS 53 is equipped with a powerful 400-volt battery utilising the latest in lithium-ion technology. The high-voltage battery has a usable energy content of 107.8 kWh, and utilises AMG-specific wiring that is adapted for high levels of performance along with a specially-configured battery management system. This advancement enables the EQS 53 to be charged at up to 200 kW at quick charging stations with DC (direct current) capability.

An onboard charging system also enables the EQS 53 to be conveniently charged at home or at public charging stations with up to 11 kW from AC (alternating current) sources, or up to 22 kW AC via the optional AC charging system.

This high-capacity system endows the EQS 53 with a recommended driving range of 587 km (ADR 81/02), assisted by the highly optimised aerodynamic shape that enables an impressively low drag coefficient (Cd) of just 0.23.

Sound to match the performance

Sound has always been an important part of the typical Mercedes-AMG driving experience, and the EQS 53 4MATIC+ brings a new, powerfully sonorous sound to electric driving.

Its sound system uses special speakers, a bass actuator and a sound generator to create a special sound experience in two versions: ‘Authentic’ or optional ‘Performance’. This exclusive AMG SOUND EXPERIENCE is generated inside and out with a tonality and intensity to match the driving status, selected driving mode or the driver’s wishes.

Any day now, screens will take over the world. Or they’ll have to make dashboards wider

Hyperscreen with AMG-specific functions and displays

In addition to its breath-taking all-electric performance, the EQS 53 4MATIC+ brings further innovation to the Mercedes-AMG range as the first model equipped with the innovative MBUX Hyperscreen.

This large (1.41m) curved display unit extends the full width of the cabin, comprising three screens under a glass cover that appear to merge into one.

The next-generation MBUX infotainment system adapts completely to its user and offers personalised suggestions for numerous functions. A ‘zero layer’ design ensures the most important applications are always displayed situationally and contextually in the field of vision.

The Hyperscreen includes Augmented Reality navigation as standard, an OLED front passenger display, and a fingerprint scanner enabling instant access to personalised settings.

Exceptional technologies

Amid a comprehensive specification, the EQS 53 includes a number of key special features. Standard rear axle steering enables a rear wheel angle of up to 9 degrees, significantly enhancing dynamic agility through corners and bends while also reducing the large car’s turning circle to compact vehicle dimensions.

An AMG high-performance compound braking system enhances both driving dynamics and safety, with six-piston brake callipers and discs at the front (415 x 33mm) and single-piston callipers and discs at the rear (378 x 22mm).

The EQS 53 is fitted as standard with AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with adaptive adjustable damping, featuring a four-link axle at the front and a multi-link axle at the rear. The components have been specifically improved by AMG engineers and configured to meet the needs of Mercedes-AMG customers with respect to both driving dynamics and ride comfort.

The EQS also adopts the DIGITAL LIGHT system that was debuted on the flagship Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Three extremely powerful LEDs in each headlamp create light that is refracted and directed by 1.3 million micro-mirrors per headlight, creating resolution of more than 2.6 million pixels per vehicle. These modules enable the Adaptive Highbeam Assist Plus feature with ULTRA RANGE for exceptional night-time performance, including an active light function with anticipatory control and topographical compensation.

A comprehensive standard specification

The EQS 53 brings an alluring and unique combination of standard inclusions combining high levels of luxury with a fitting performance-focused specification, blended with EV-specific technologies and a suite of safety systems.

Inside, a suitably luxurious experience is assured by multicontour, climatised (heated/cooled) and powered AMG sports seats with active cushion and hot stone massage functions; AMG nappa leather upholstery; head-up display; THERMOTRONIC four-zone climate control and standard AIR BALANCE Package; a Burmester 3D surround sound system with 15 speakers and 710-watt output; a digital TV tuner plus DAB+ digital radio tuner; active ambient lighting; a panoramic glass electric sliding sunroof; heat and noise insulated, infrared-reflecting laminated glass all round; and the Mercedes me Connect smartphone app with a range of remotely configurable functions for navigation, safety, comfort and infotainment from a connected device. An AMG Performance multifunction steering wheel in Nappa leather includes steering wheel-mounted rotary controllers for on-the-fly control of AMG-specific driving modes.

A comprehensive array of standard safety features includes Driver Assistance Package Plus with a suite of active assistances; PRE-SAFE PLUS accident anticipation; PARKTRONIC parking assistant with 360-degree view; and keyless entry and start with flush-integrated door handles.

The exterior, optimised for aerodynamic efficiency, is characterised by AMG-specific body styling including an AMG spoiler lip on the bootlid, plus LED rear lights in a 3D helix design with light band at the rear. Standard 21-inch AMG 5-cross-spoke light alloy wheels in tantalite grey can be substituted for an optional matt black finish, or for 22-inch multi-spoke light-alloy wheels in matt black.

EV-specific standard features include acoustic ambient protection – a low-speed audible warning for pedestrians up to 20 km/h, and reversing tone; plus a standard ‘Type 2’ recharging unit for 240V.
