Seductive Mercedes-AMG GT is love at first sight

THE UNDISPUTED KING of the Mercedes-AMG performance range, the GT coupe and roadster, now receives a significant update, as innovations flow from the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé to the even more seductive two-door models.

“The AMG GT embodies the core of our brand, ‘Driving Performance’, in a unique way,” says Tobias Moers, Chairman of the Management Board of Mercedes-AMG GmbH.

“At its debut in September 2014, the GT not only turned the heads of customers and sports car enthusiasts, but also created new dimensions in the competitive environment. In order to continue this success story, we have now equipped the two-door models with numerous innovations from the AMG GT 4-Door Coupé.”

The updates will apply to Coupé and Roadster variants covering the GT S, GT C and GT R models.

To our eyes, the coupe is more distinctive …

Added innovation and refinement

All models in the range receive significant new equipment to enhance the intuitive operation of the two-door GT models, directly inherited from the Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door Coupé launched in Australia in 2019.

Highlights include a new centre console with AMG Drive Unit controls placed in a stylised V8 arrangement, featuring display buttons to select the drive programs and control dynamic functions. A new AMG Performance steering wheel includes a rotary controller for quick and intuitive switching between drive modes, plus a second controller allowing the driver to nominate two performance shortcuts that can easily be toggled during performance driving without need for the driver to take their eyes off the road or track ahead.

In front of the driver sits a fully digital and customisable 12.3-inch instrument cluster, alongside a 10.25-inch media display that includes both Apple and Google smartphone integration. A front-mounted camera has been added, while Traffic Sign Assist displays relevant road speed limits. New LED headlights, alloy wheels and paint colours add an updated appearance, while the addition of the clever Mercedes me Connect system allows the driver to control several key functions and view relevant vehicle data and service information via an app on a linked smartphone.

… and it has the advantage of a permanent roof (but still no rear seat)

Mercedes-AMG GT S Coupé

The AMG GT S Coupé incorporates a generous specification and performance package, starting with a 4.0-litre, twin-turbocharged V8 connected to a 7G-DCT seven-speed auto sending outputs of 384 kW and 670 Nm to the rear wheels. Standard features include heated and electric AMG Sports Seats in Nappa leather upholstery, an AMG Performance steering wheel in Nappa leather/DINAMICA microfibre, a panoramic sunroof, DISTRONIC cruise control with Active Distance Assist, a 10-speaker Burmester sound system with a total 640-watt output, navigation with dynamic route guidance on the 10.25-inch high-resolution centre screen, and the AMG Track Pace system that logs and downloads data from racetrack driving sessions.

It also includes AMG RIDE CONTROL suspension, an AMG electronic limited-slip differential, an AMG selectable exhaust system, an AMG high-performance composite braking system with red brake callipers, a retractable rear aerofoil, a hands-free sensor to open the boot lid, and staggered 19- and 20-inch AMG alloy wheel package in matte black with a high-sheen finish. A full suite of safety systems includes Blind Spot Assist, Lane Keeping Assist and the PRE-SAFE accident anticipation system.

For well-heeled buyers who like the feel of wind in the hair

Mercedes-AMG GT C Coupé and Roadster

In addition to the GT S specification, the AMG GT C Coupé adds AMG Performance Seats, black DINAMICA microfibre for the AMG Performance steering wheel, climatised seats with both heating and ventilation, and AMG 19/20-inch five twin-spoke alloy wheels in titanium grey. The AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package comprising dynamic engine and transmission mounts, as well as more tautly tuned suspension and a specific steering tune, is further developed with rear axle steering. Outputs from the 4.0-litre V8 are 410 kW and 680 Nm for both the GT C Coupé and Roadster.

The GT C Roadster incorporates a fabric soft-top roof with fabric roof lining, as well as roadster-specific features including AIRSCARF neck-level heating and a draught-stop to further reduce cabin turbulence.

But we wouldn’t say “no” if a convertible was the only one offered

Mercedes-AMG GT R Coupé

The AMG GT R Coupé remains the ultimate expression of two-door performance in the Mercedes-AMG range, extracting an impressive 430 kW and 700 Nm from the twin-turbo V8. In addition to the standard specification of the GT C Coupé, the GT R adds the AMG Interior Night Package which highlights key trim features in high-gloss black, the AMG interior piano lacquer package, Nappa/DINAMICA upholstery and seat heating.

A weight-saving carbon-fibre roof, static rear aerofoil, sport tyres and eye-catching yellow brake callipers complete a visually stunning and awe-inspiring package.

The dashboard will be familiar to M-B owners
