IN A SAD MISFORTUNE, a one-of-one 1979 Ford Ghia Probe 1 was burnt to the ground just hours after leaving the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance.
The Probe was designed by Don Kopka, head of Ford Design in the 70s. It was lauded for its aero-focused wedge shape, glass roof and wheel covers when it was unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1979. It featured a 2.3-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and was built on modified Foxbody Mustang underpinnings. It achieved a drag coefficient of a very impressive 0.25Cd.
