BMW goes all out with X2 Mesh Edition

EVERYBODY IS GETTING INTO the act with limited editions. Now BMW join them early next year with introduction of the new X2 M Mesh Edition.

The new variant takes the sophisticated design of the X2 – which includes details such as the additional BMW logo on the C-pillar that references classic BMW models such as the 2000 CS and 3.0 CSL – and builds on it with distinctive, edition-specific touches. Whether you like them or think they are totally over the top is up to you.

The X2 M Mesh Edition will be offered to local customers in the sDrive20i M Sport X package variant, which is powered by a BMW TwinPower Turbo inline four-cylinder engine.

We’re not sure about the boy racer striping

Eye-catching BMW M mesh kidney grille and new colour accents

The new M Mesh Edition builds stylistically on the M Sport X model and gives the BMW X2 an even more exclusive and distinctive appearance (we’ll leave that to your own judgement).

The most prominent change is the BMW M mesh kidney grille in high-gloss black.

As with the grille on the BMW X2 M35i, it has a pronounced three-dimensional mesh inspired by race cars. The new signature colour Frozen Black-Brown metallic – a mocha-like shade – can be found on the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition in the exclusive inserts in the bumper trim, the prominent cladding on the side skirts and doors and the wheel arch trim.

The special edition model features bold new orange decals on the bonnet, the sides of the front bumper and the front and rear doors, according to BMW, to “complement to the new Brooklyn Grey metallic paint finish exclusive to the M Mesh Edition, as well as the Sapphire Black metallic exterior shade”.

If one of the other paint shades – Alpine White, Phytonic Blue metallic or Sunset Orange metallic – is specified, the decals come in black. The colour of the decals is shared by the inserts for the new M aerodynamic wheels, which are 20-inch all round for the Australian market.

BMW Individual high-gloss Shadow Line with extended features comes as standard on X2 M Mesh Edition. Its inclusion marks the first time the package has been offered on X2.

The package includes high-gloss black for the window surrounds, exterior mirror surrounds, mirror base, mirror triangle, B-pillar trim and trim surround on the C-pillars.

Shadow Line also includes the surround for the M mesh kidney grille, a ring around the BMW badge on the tailgate and exhaust tailpipe finishers in black chrome.

BMW have always been superb at creating luxurious interiors

LED headlights and clear surfacing shape front-end design

The clear surfacing of the updated front end of the X2 teams with the standard LED headlights to create a distinctive appearance.

Deletion of the circular front fog lights featured previously simplifies the design of the front bumper. Their role is taken over by the poor weather light integrated into the LED headlights. In adverse weather conditions and low visibility, judicious activation of the cornering light provides optimal illumination of the road’s edge.

Projection of an X2 logo from the exterior mirror on the driver’s side – the first time such a feature has been offered on the model – provides a modern and high-tech touch, while door handle lighting, ground lighting and exterior mirror lighting add convenience at night and in low light conditions.

The Germans love brown interiors

New colours and M elements create stylish, sporty cabin atmosphere

The visually expressive exterior of the BMW X2 M Mesh Edition, with its new colour accents, extends into the interior.

Bi-colour interior appointments are the headline feature of the new model.

The exclusive covers for the M sport seats with integral head restraints and the rear seat bench feature a blend of Dakota leather in eye-catching Mocha and Anthracite-coloured Alcantara.

Contrast stitching in orange, which can also be found on the instrument panel and centre console, add finishing touches to the upholstery.

This creates a colour connection with the decals at the front end and sides of the body, as well as the accents in the exclusive M aerodynamic wheels. The floor mats have edge binding and stitching in orange, while the entry sills also integrate “Edition” lettering.

M Sport seats with integral head restraints and a selection of BMW M hallmarks heighten the car’s sporting impression including M stainless steel pedals, M leather steering wheel and key fob with an exclusive M identifier.

The interior trim strips are in Aluminium Hexagon Anthracite and combine with BMW Individual headliner in Anthracite. Exclusive LED fibre-optic light guides in the door trim add flourishes of colour.

The cabin showcases BMW’s hallmark driver focus with ergonomically arranged controls and a driver’s seating position that provides a superior view out and optimal command over the task of driving.

The boot has a capacity of 470 litres, ensuring it is equipped for leisure activities of all kinds – from shopping trips to weekends away and bike rides.

The panoramic roof, which is standard on local models, floods the cabin with light. The front section of the roof can be tilted and opened like a conventional sunroof.

Plenty of get-up-and-go from the 2-litre turbo four-cylinder engine

BMW TwinPower Turbo at the heart of X2 M Mesh Edition

Australian-delivered X2 M Mesh Edition models will feature the efficient and responsive BMW TwinPower Turbo inline four-cylinder engine.

This powerplant develops 141kW and 280Nm and is mated to a seven-speed sport automatic with double clutch, which helps propel the X2 M Mesh Edition from standstill to 100km/h in just 7.7 seconds.

Orange paint has been applied wherever possible

Intuitive displays and assistance systems abound

The BMW X2 M Mesh Edition boasts intuitive operation and intelligent connectivity, allowing the driver to focus their attention entirely on the most important task at hand: driving.

The ID6 display and operating concept offers three different ways of operating the individual vehicle and navigation functions: the iDrive Controller, the control display’s touchscreen functionality or a voice control system capable of understanding naturally formulated sentences.

The 10.25-inch freestanding control display provides a quick overview of all key information in high definition, while the BMW Head-Up Display projects all important driving information and navigation/assistance system readouts onto the windscreen.

Real Time Traffic Information with up-to-the-minute traffic data helps with route planning and enables drivers to react quickly to possible delays.

Smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay allows selected iPhone functions to be used wirelessly and with ease via the vehicle’s control display.

The telephony with wireless charging option, meanwhile, allows inductive charging of compatible smartphones and mobile phones.
