More AMG magic from Mercedes-Benz

IN A BUSY WEEK, Mercedes-Benz has announced a swag of desirable new models.

Updated with the latest in eye-catching styling combined with a generous list of luxurious features, the Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4MATIC+ four-door coupé offers even more distinctive appeal, and just 20 Australian customers will get their hands on a very special Limited Edition.

Since redefining the coupé market (by creating something that isn’t a coupe) with its world premiere in 2004, the CLS four-door coupé has carved a much-loved niche for itself in the Mercedes-Benz range – in fact, more than 450,000 examples of the CLS have been sold around the world.

In 2021, the CLS once again offers a compelling choice for customers who prize the distinctive presence of one of the most highly coveted Mercedes-Benz models of all.

The latest iteration is represented by a single variant epitomising standout sportiness and distinctive presence. The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4MATIC+ makes a bold statement with revised styling, effortless performance and an impressive array of safety, technology, luxury and comfort features.

Probably a good idea not to kerb these …

Eye-catching presence from any angle

A distinctive presence is assured with Mercedes-AMG styling – exterior detail differing from its predecessor includes a new front apron with striking air intakes, two louvres at the sides, and a front splitter in high gloss black framing a new AMG-specific radiator grille.

The AMG Night Package, fitted as standard, finishes selected exterior elements in high-gloss black including the exterior mirror housings and side window surrounds. Redesigned 20-inch AMG multi-spoke light-alloy wheels add an air of sophistication.

The rear apron has a black diffuser-look insert and a silver-chrome trim strip, while the bootlid is finished with an AMG spoiler lip. Dark-tinted privacy glass from the B-pillar completes an eye-catching appearance.

The MBUX (user experience) is a feature

User-friendly features

A key technological highlight is the latest generation of the MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) multimedia system, including two large 12.3-inch high-resolution screens. These sit side-by-side for a widescreen look, with the media display being a touchscreen. This includes the latest generation of voice control over a wide array of functions using “Hey Mercedes”, while some common commands such as “answer phone” no longer need the precursor statement.

Additionally, the CLS 53 is equipped with the latest generation of the AMG Multifunction steering wheel in Nappa leather and featuring innovative technology such as enlarged touch control panels, for fingertip control of both multimedia screens. A pair of AMG buttons are within easy reach for easy driving mode changes on the fly, plus quick access to a pre-selected menu of favourite actions.

Familiar to every Benz owner from the A180 up

Interior

Befitting a sporty coupé of the CLS 53’s impressive stature, a comprehensive list of equipment is standard. This includes a 13 speaker Burmester surround sound system, a head-up display, powered and heated front seats with memory function, DAB+ digital radio, an AMG Performance steering wheel in Nappa leather, seats in black AMG Nappa leather, 64-colour ambient interior lighting, wireless charging for compatible devices, smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Google Android Auto, and open-pore black ash wood trim. Full compatibility with the Mercedes me connect smartphone app brings a range of remote operations, functions and vehicle information into the owner’s hands.

An expectedly strong suite of standard safety features includes nine airbags plus a 360-degree camera with dynamic guidelines, plus a range of active safety assistances including Active Lane Change Assist, Active Parking Assist with PARKTRONIC, and Active Traffic Assist. The PRE-SAFE Impulse Side accident preparation system provides a crucial first line of defence against injury.

Assured performance

With 320 kW and 520 Nm from the 3.0-litre, turbocharged M 256 six-cylinder engine (plus additional electric support of up to 16 kW and 250 Nm available from the 48-volt Internal Starter-Generator), acceleration from zero to 100 km/h comes in at 4.5 seconds. A 9G-TRONIC nine-speed auto and instant traction from 4MATIC+ all-wheel grip ensure the CLS 53 matches its sporty appearance with assured performance.

Adding an AMG Performance Exhaust (selectable), the AMG DYNAMIC SELECT driving modes that can be changed from a dial on the steering wheel, and AIR BODY CONTROL air suspension that dynamically adjusts to each selected driving mode, the CLS 53 can transform from effortless cruiser to sharpened performer in a heartbeat.

For a short time only, an even more limited edition

As the (slightly silly) name suggests, the opportunity to secure this exclusive edition of the new CLS 53 is strictly limited with only 299 vehicles worldwide, including 20 examples making their way to Australia.

The Mercedes-AMG CLS 53 4MATIC+ “Limited Edition | One of 299” (yes, that really is the full name!) adds a repertoire of visual enhancements and sporty appointments. These include an AMG Performance steering wheel in Nappa leather with DINAMICA, microfibre the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS package including RACE drive program with Drift mode, power-closing doors, AMG Nappa leather upholstery in two-tone silver-grey pearl/black, surround lighting with AMG brand logo projection, and an AMG indoor car cover.

Distinctive details also include AMG Carbon-Fibre interior trim, designo Red seat belts, red brake callipers, extended AMG Night Package, AMG-specific darkened radiator grille, 20-inch matte black AMG 5-twin-spoke light-alloy wheels, high-gloss black exterior badging, and Cashmere White Magno or Selenite Grey Magno paintwork.
