Hyundai welcomes all-new Tucson

WITHIN HYUNDAI’S LOGICAL RANGE OF SUVS (from small to large) the new Tucson slots comfortably between the Kona and Santa Fe.

The all-new Hyundai Tucson ushers in futuristic styling, segment-first technology, and a range-wide optional N Line pack.

Additionally, Hyundai claims the Tucson sets a new standard for safety technology, with the most features in the class.

Segment-leading features available in all-new Tucson include, Blind-Spot Collision Assist (BCA), Blind-Spot View Monitor (BVM) and Remote Smart Parking Assist System (RSPAS).

Unshrouded LCD instrument cluster is a feature (this is the N Line)

A futuristic, unshrouded 10.25-inch LCD digital instrument cluster and vertically stacked 10.25-inch full-touch multimedia display contribute to a high-tech, sophisticated ambience inside.

An available elevated bridge-style console with shift-by-wire pushbutton gear selection brings superb ergonomics and a continuation of Tucson’s futuristic style.

New Smartstream 2.0-litre petrol, 1.6-litre turbo petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines provide a broad choice of powertrains for customers.

The new Tucson gets more curves (this is the Highlander)

Fourth-generation Tucson blends aggressive curves with crisp lines, and is bigger than the preceding model, with a long bonnet and short overhangs on a stretched wheelbase, to deliver greater cabin space than most vehicles in its class.

An optional N Line pack offered from the range-opening Tucson introduces sports-inspired styling, 19-inch alloy wheels, and LED front and rear lighting, as well as the 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster display and leather and suede upholstery.

“Since its introduction in 2004, Tucson has established itself as an SUV with broad family appeal, selling more than 220,000 units in Australia,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Chief Executive Officer, Jun Heo said.

“Now in its fourth generation, all-new Tucson’s futuristic styling, segment-leading active safety, convenience and comfort technologies, and enticing N Line pack make it a uniquely appealing medium SUV,” he said.

Lots of interesting design elements

Tucson 2.0 CRDi variants also feature a Remote Smart Parking Assist (RSPAS) system.

  • Lane Keeping Assist (LKA)
  • Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist (FCA – car/pedestrian/cyclist)

Looks good, and capable too

Exterior design

The new Tucson marks the first application of Hyundai’s Sensuous Sportiness design language on an SUV, to create a futuristic image and a uniquely high-tech sensibility.

A parametric grille – incorporating hidden signature lights on some variants – creates a futuristic visage for 2022 Tucson.

A broad taillight treatment is complemented by a new glass-type Hyundai emblem.

Tying these front and rear styling treatments together are bold side character lines featuring a Z-shaped graphic, which gives 2022 Tucson a dynamic and aggressive appearance.

All-new Tucson’s distinctive look is further enhanced with the sports-inspired optional N Line pack, which brings an N Line body kit, 19-inch alloys, a Gloss Black grille with hidden DRLs, silver-painted N Line skid plates, and LED front and rear lighting.

Interiors are all appealing, but especially the N Line (here)

Cleanly designed interior

The interior adopts a clean design centred on a futuristic, unshrouded 10.25-inch LCD instrument cluster display and a seamlessly integrated 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display.

A sweeping horizontal motif sees the dashboard and door trims connected via crisp accent lines to create a sense of space and elegance, while an elevated bridge-style console brings the aesthetic of a high-tech command centre.

Rear seat space is good for the category (we’re not so sure about the panoramic sunroof though)

Three engine choices

The new Tucson is offered with three new Smartstream powertrains, including 2.0-litre petrol, 1.6-litre turbo-petrol and 2.0-litre turbo-diesel engines.

Engine Specifications

  Smartstream 2.0 MPi Smartstream 1.6 T-GDi Smartstream 2.0 CRDi
Transmission 6AT 7DCT 8AT
Power 115kW 132kW 137kW
Torque 192Nm 265Nm 416Nm
Driven wheels 2WD AWD AWD

In addition, Tucson Elite and Highlander offer an all-new Smartstream 1.6-litre Turbo GDi Turbo petrol engine teamed with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and all-wheel drive.

Tucson’s advanced HTRAC AWD is developed as a multi-mode system, and provides an electronic, variable torque-split clutch with active torque control between the front and rear axles.

By tracking vehicle speed and road conditions, the system can optimally apportion torque between the front and rear axles as well as control braking between left and right wheels.

All-new Tucson’s driver-selectable Normal, Eco, Sport and Smart drive modes apply specific HTRAC torque distribution settings, to provide confident control in all conditions.

For example, the Sport setting delivers an agile feel by sending a greater proportion of the available torque to the rear wheels.

The system has a wide range of torque distribution variability, and is designed to be advantageous in various conditions, including straight-line acceleration, medium/high-speed cornering, and during hill-starts.

Additionally, the HTRAC AWD system brings a Terrain Mode specific to diesel variants, to enable safer driving on challenging unsealed roads.

Luggage space is generous …
… the seats fold almost flat for even more space

Covid means no local chassis and handling tuning

Tuscon adopts the global tune, honed at the Namyang R&D centre, and developed to deliver the Hyundai-signature ‘comfortable, yet surprisingly capable’ flavour.

While local tuning was not carried out on this model, the chassis was put through the gruelling testing and scoring system developed by HMCA for evaluation and sign-off, which incorporates the full spectrum of challenging Australian city, highway, country and gravel roads.

“Tuscon passed with flying colours,” Hyundai Motor Company Australia Product Planning and Development Specialist Tim Rodgers said. “We’re super happy with it.”
