VOLKSWAGEN’S TOUAREG IS A LARGE and popular luxury SUV, too often overlooked by buyers in this class. Now there’s another reason for them to take a look, with VW announcing additions to equipment and reductions in price; plus a fresh version in the form of the Touareg R.
Volkswagen’s new halo vehicle is the R version of this SUV. Made available in Australia – the world’s biggest R model market – for the first time, it is also the brand’s first Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) to be sold here.
After protracted negotiations, the Touareg R has been introduced at a recommended retail price of at $129,990 – some $10,000 down from the previous range topper, the 2021 Touareg V8 TDI Wolfsburg Edition.
The same value story extends to the Touareg range entrant, the 170TDI. The pre-midlife upgrade version retailed $89,240. The renewed version adds the Innovision Cockpit and other previously unavailable specification to the value of more than $10,000 (VW figures), but at a new list price of $86,790 (plus on road costs).
Previously priced $108,240, the renewed Touareg 210TDI Elegance is now $99,990 with the addition of more than $4,000 in extra specification as standard.
At $109,990, the Touareg 210TDI R-Line is now priced down almost to the level of the previous Elegance grade, but with $5000 in additions. Previously the R-Line was $117,540.
“The challenge in this frantically competitive SUV market was to make the Touareg more competitive,” Volkswagen Passenger Vehicles Director Michal Szanieki said.
“From the entry variant to the new pinnacle of the range, the team has achieved that. Not only are the more obvious competitors to Volkswagen outpointed and outpriced, there are dimensions to the Touareg’s offer at any level – not least in terms of performance and technology – to better SUVs from the prestige brands.”
