AUSTRALIA’S FAVOURITE SPORTS CAR has now reached its seventh generation, and Ford has released pricing and specification details of the hugely popular Mustang.
The new Mustang is available in three models – EcoBoost, GT and the all-new Mustang Dark Horse. The EcoBoost is powered by a 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder engine, while the GT and Mustang Dark Horse feature a 5.0-litre V8 under the bonnet in two different outputs.
The GT is available in Fastback with a six-speed manual ($77,002) or ten-speed automatic ($80,902) transmission. The GT is also offered as a convertible body style ($86,752) exclusively with an automatic transmission.
A 1000-unit special edition model for Australia, Mustang Dark Horse is the first new Mustang performance nameplate in 21 years and will be available with both a unique TREMEC six-speed manual transmission ($99,102 plus on road costs), and an automatic transmission ($103,002). Mustang Dark Horse is exclusively available in the Fastback body style.
“We are thrilled to bring the new seventh-generation Ford Mustang to Australia,” said Andrew Birkic, President and CEO, Ford Australia. “The Mustang has always been a favourite among Australian drivers, and the new model takes the experience to a whole new level. It’s sure to make owners smile every time they drive it.”
“We are confident that the new Mustang will be a hit with Australian drivers,” said Birkic. “The car’s improved performance, handling, and the addition of the Mustang Dark Horse special edition make it a great choice for anyone looking for an exhilarating driving experience.”
The new Mustang is available for purchase at Ford dealerships across Australia, with first customer arrivals scheduled for Q2 2024.
Modern Design with Timeless Mustang Cues
The seventh generation adds modern chiselled looks to its heritage-inspired design, which sets out to appeal to the broadest Mustang customer base yet.
Its low, horizontal brow emphasises overall frontal width, while the upper grille shape is influenced by the original 1960s design. The LED headlamps continue the Mustang’s classic lighting signature. Its sleek roofline and broad sprinting stance are also true to the authentic proportions of the first generation, while the widened rear haunches point to the power over the wheels in true Mustang style.
A Completely Rethought Interior
Behind the chiselled exterior lies the most technologically advanced, driver-centric cockpit of any Mustang to date. The all-new interior offers the driver two flowing and curved displays that can be quickly customized to show information the driver wants or needs to see.
The 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster can be customised to display different animated designs and new drive-mode dependent visuals. Based on the same Unreal Engine 3D creation tool used in modern video games, the car’s current setup – based on drive mode selection – is displayed on the centre stack as real-time graphical renderings. Settings can be adjusted by simply swiping the graphic to rotate the car virtually in a true gamified style.
“We’re taking advantage of every pixel,” said Craig Sandvig, Ford Mustang interaction design manager.
“We can be creative in showing necessary driving information and give the driver control of selecting vibrant colour schemes new to Mustang, classic Mustang gauges or even a ‘calm’ screen where only minimal details are displayed.”
This digital instrument cluster flows seamlessly into a 13.2-inch SYNC 4 centre stack behind the same piece of integrated glass, angled towards the driver. Together, these screens create a fully immersive digital experience that emulates a fighter jet cockpit – but in a real-world sports car.
All Australian Mustang models come with an advanced B&O Sound System, providing crisp audio through 12 speakers including a subwoofer.
Fourth Generation Coyote 5.0L V8
The way Mustang looks, drives and sounds is key to the experience that makes customers want to get in the driver’s seat and hit the road. The new Mustang delivers an even more exciting drive experience with new and advanced engine technologies.
Paired with a six-speed manual transmission or a 10-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters, the fourth generation Coyote 5.0L V8 engine has been revised with dual 80mm throttle bodies and air inlets which work together to maximise power. A dual-fuel delivery system works to deliver high-pressure direct-injection and low-pressure port fuel injection, increasing low-end torque and high-rpm power.
Revised Turbochargers for EcoBoost
The updated 2.3L EcoBoost engine is paired with a 10-speed automatic transmission, including Select Shift capability and paddle shifters. Updates to the 2.3L EcoBoost engine include a revised exhaust manifold, revised twin-scroll, low-inertia turbocharger with electronic wastegate, revised camshaft timing and integrated air-induction system. Importantly, the Port fuel and direct-injection delivers increased low-end torque and high-rpm power by using the Port injection for low engine speed and direct-injection for high-rpm operation.
Electric Park Brake, with ‘Drift’ Brake
In a first for Mustang, the Electric Park & Drift Brake3 is unlike any other seen before. It serves a dual purpose as Electric Park Brake during the everyday on-road environment and can also be enabled as a slalom course-ready Drift Brake3 at the racetrack. Wrapped in leather it is pleasingly tactile and has the visual appeal and functionality of a traditional hand brake, but when taken to the racetrack, thanks to software calibrations within the Track Drive Mode, drivers can unlock the drifting capability of their Mustang.
Active Valve Performance Exhaust
All Mustang series feature the Active Valve Performance Exhaust which helps reduce back pressure and is designed to help improve power whilst also providing Mustang’s signature deep growl. Controlled via the steering wheel or centre-stack touchscreen, drivers can select from four modes: Normal, Sport, Track and a Quiet mode, each offering a signature rumble. The Quiet mode ensures the exhaust valves are set to be closed during a pre-selected timeframe so that the Mustang doesn’t wake the neighbours.
Track Apps
The All-New Mustang supports track enthusiasts with embedded track apps on the 12.4-inch digital instrument cluster. It will also provide the driver the following performance options including:
- Acceleration Timer
- Accelerometer
- Brake Performance
- Lap Timer
- Launch Control (manual transmission only)
- Line-Lock
- View/Clear Results
Mustang – Built For Performance
Australian Mustang models feature many performance options as standard. Australian Mustang variants feature big BremboTM brakes, a larger radiator with improved cooling capability and more powerful cooling fans. 5.0L V8 GT models also receive an auxiliary engine oil cooler, along with 19×9-inch front and 19×9.5-inch rear Carbonised Grey-painted aluminium wheels, with 255/40R19 front and 275/40R19 rear Pirelli P-Zero tyres.
Mustang Dark Horse
A special team of Ford engineers, designers and experts worked for more than three years to create Mustang Dark Horse, a street-and track-capable performance Mustang with striking visual cues and the capability sports car lovers expect.
The heart of Mustang Dark Horse is its unique 5.0-litre Coyote V8 engine, which pumps out an exhilarating 349kW8 and 548Nm.
Mustang Dark Horse can be ordered in Australia with the unique six-speed TREMEC manual transmission that connects to the driver through a 3D-printed titanium shift ball. The manual includes a transmission oil cooler. Drivers have the option to choose Ford’s advanced 10-speed automatic transmission with sport paddle shifters for fast and precise shifting – from the motorway to the race circuit.
Several powertrain enhancements were made for performance at the track. Mustang Dark Horse receives auxiliary brake cooling ducts, a transmission cooler and rear axle cooler to improve endurance and recovery.
The Mustang Dark Horse has unique chassis tuning including stiffer front springs and uniquely tuned MagneRide shocks capable of monitoring wheel and tyre movement 1,000 times per second, which optimises performance based on road surface or driving mode.
Mustang Dark Horse also features wider staggered wheels (19 by 9.5-inch front and 19 by 10-inch rear), with stopping courtesy of Brembo front six piston brakes with 390mm rotors. Mustang Dark Horse puts torque down without losing traction through a Torsen differential.
Driver-Focused Immersive Digital Cockpit
The Mustang Dark Horse infuses even more performance, style and functionality into the all-new seventh-generation car’s technologically advanced, driver-centric interior.
A leather-wrapped, flat-bottomed steering wheel features microsuede inserts and is finished with Bright Indigo Blue accent stitching. Anodised silver paddle shifters are integrated on 10-speed automatic transmission equipped cars, while a dedicated drive mode button is at thumb’s reach, allowing drivers to quickly choose the desired driving setup.
Bright Indigo Blue stitching continues across the door panels and seats, gear shift boot and centre console, lifting the ambiance of the cabin. This is further enhanced by unique blue seatbelts and optional Recaro seats in Deep Indigo Blue with a unique seat perforation, emitting further hints of blue below the surface.
Interior trim, bezels and vents are finished in Black Alley – a dark metallic gloss replacing the familiar bright silver shades of other Mustang trim levels.
Strikingly Aggressive Functional Styling
Mustang Dark Horse carries the most striking visual cues of any new road-going Mustang. At the front, a bold, shadow graphic surrounds the darkened LED headlamps, which compliments a unique, gloss black grille with trapezoidal nostrils and Mustang Dark Horse-unique lower front bumper with high gloss ‘fangs.’ Lower side skirts and a fixed rear wing, new race-inspired diffuser and darkened quad exhaust tips demonstrate the car’s track-focused design cues.
New Mustang Dark Horse badges were designed for this performance version of Mustang to visually separate it from other models. The badges are placed on the front quarters, boot and door sills, while a dark, anodized version of the famous pony stays on the front. Inside, unique Mustang Dark Horse badging is featured on the instrument panel and digital display screens, and each car features an individual chassis number.
