Mitsubishi sets new standard with 10-year/200,000km warranty

IN AN ANNOUNCEMENT THAT WILL send ripples right around the motor industry, Mitsubishi Australia has rewritten the warranty rule book.

Effective today, every Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited vehicle will be sold with the new Diamond Advantage Program.

The Diamond Advantage Program has three components:

  • 10-year/200,000km new car warranty. If owners do not service with a Mitsubishi dealer, they will still be covered by Mitsubishi’s 5-year/100,000km warranty.
  • 10 year/150,000km capped price servicing, and
  • 4 year roadside assistance, if they service with an authorised Mitsubishi Dealer.

Mitsubishi Motors’ Director of Marketing and Operations, Rob Nazzari said, “This new 10-year extended warranty puts owners in control. Every Mitsubishi already has at least a five-year warranty. Now, with our 10-year Diamond Advantage program, owners that complete their scheduled capped-price services with an authorised Mitsubishi Dealer will enjoy a 10-year warranty, 10-year capped price servicing and up to 4 years of roadside assistance.”

There are very few conditions to Mitsubishi’s ground-breaking new warranty. It is only available to private buyers and small businesses (less than five vehicles). PHEV Traction Batteries are covered separately by an eight-year/160,000km warranty. Genuine accessories are covered by the new vehicle warranty (standard and extended if applicable) when fitted by a Mitsubishi dealer, or 12 months/20/000km from fitment, whichever is greater.

If the warranty is maintained, it will be transferred to the new owner on resale.

This new deal for customers is, without doubt, a game changer.

When Kia introduced the seven-year warranty, there was much scepticism in the industry, but it has proven to be a winner for the company.

Mitsubishi buyers are now in a position to know precisely what vehicle ownership will cost them for the next ten years.

Being able to sell their cars with the remainder of the warranty will make them far easier to sell and, presumably, more valuable. (Mitsubishi owners already own their vehicles for an average of seven years, so even at that point, they can sell their cars with three years of warranty still remaining.)

As a result of Kia’s initiative, most companies have increased their warranties to five years (European manufacturers have stubbornly held to three years). On occasion, special offers will include a longer warranty period, and a few companies (notably MG and SsangYong) have joined Kia in offering a seven-year warranty.

There is no doubt this ten-year warranty will have a major impact on Mitsubishi sales.

We can only hope other manufacturers (the Europeans in particular) take note.
