Long roof version of the BMW M5 set for Australian launch

BMW WILL STRENGTHEN ITS HIGH-PERFORMANCE line-up while simultaneously diversifying its product strategy with introduction of the all-new BMW M5 Touring in early 2025.

The new offering marks the third time BMW M has offered a Touring variant of the legendary M5 but the first time it has featured an electrified powertrain.

Its arrival in Australia follows this year’s introduction of another rapid Touring variant that also wears an M badge – the fully electric, 442kW i5 M60 xDrive Touring – and last year’s launch of the critically acclaimed M3 Touring.

The strategy symbolises BMW Australia’s commitment to offering a wide range of solutions for its customers that bring together outstanding driving dynamics, powerful and efficient drive systems, versatility and advanced technology.

The all-new M5 Touring will be the third BMW M model in the current line-up to feature the M HYBRID system following deployment in its sedan sibling and the BMW XM.

The M HYBRID system aboard the M5, derived from the BMW M Hybrid World Endurance Championship (WEC) racecar, delivers thundering power and torque figures of 535kW and 1000Nm.

The 4.4-litre M TwinPower Turbo V8 develops 430kW and 750Nm while also being capable of spinning to 7,200rpm. The maximum output of the electric motor – integrated in the transmission – is 145kW with nominal torque of 280Nm, though a pre-gearing stage enables effective torque at the transmission input to be increased to 450Nm.

The combination of the petrol and electric drive units – in addition to power transfer courtesy of an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, highly configurable M xDrive all-wheel-drive and electronically controlled Active M Differential – unlocks storming performance.

The new M5 Touring can accelerate from rest to 100km/h in 3.6 seconds, while Australian-delivered models will achieve a top speed of 305km/h due to the offering of M Driver’s Package as standard equipment.

The sports exhaust system of the new BMW M5 Touring integrates electrically controlled, continuously adjustable flaps to provide a sonorous note that is channelled through four tailpipes, each measuring 100mm in diameter.

The character and scope of the new BMW M5 Touring goes beyond the thrum of its exhaust note, with its ability to also drive in all-electric mode.

The electric motor can propel the BMW M5 Touring to a top speed of 140km/h, while the high-voltage battery that feeds the motor has a usable energy capacity of 18.6kWh. This enables an electric-only driving range of up to 61 kilometres on the WLTP testing cycle. The Combined Charging Unit supports AC charging of the high-voltage battery at up to 11kW.

BMW IconicSounds Electric, now a signature of electrified BMW models, provides an acoustic accompaniment to the workings of the electric motor.

An M-specific electric drive sound provides authentic responses to throttle inputs when the M5 Touring is operating in all-electric mode.

Chassis dynamics are tuned to engage and to effectively put the ample power of the new BMW M5 Touring to the road. The suspension set up comprises a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle with bespoke kinematics and elastokinematics. It also has adaptive M suspension with electronically-controlled dampers to optimise the body’s connection to the road.

Other aspects include Integral Active Steering, with includes variable steering and rear wheel steering of up to 1.5 degrees, and an M Compound braking system.

A distinctive styling package accompanies the power delivery and engaging performance of the new BMW M5 Touring. It includes muscular wheel arch and side skirt extensions, a sculptural front apron and aerodynamically shaped M rear spoiler in a high-gloss black finish. It complements these elements with a panorama glass roof that brings ample natural light into the cabin when required.

The new BMW M5 Touring delivers commanding and aggressive road presence. It has unique proportions that – as with the M5 Sedan – set itself apart more clearly than ever before from the body variant on which it is based.

At 5096mm in length and 1970 in width, it is 36mm longer and 70mm wider than the BMW i5 M60 xDrive Touring. It is 1mm taller, while its wheelbase, at 3006mm, is 11mm greater than its fully electric long roof cousin.

The luggage capacity of the BMW M5 Touring ranges from 500 to 1630 litres, providing considerable rear space for a variety of applications.

Twenty- and 21-inch M light alloy wheels with distinctive designs feature on the front and rear axles. The interior similarly showcases elements that combine luxury and high-performance befitting of the BMW M5 Touring’s stature while also integrating intuitive technology, such as the latest version of BMW iDrive running Operating System 8.5.

Other highlights of the cabin include a newly designed flat-bottomed steering wheel, Merino leather trim, the BMW Interaction Bar and ambient lighting with M-specific interior lighting including Welcome and Goodbye Animation.

A control panel on the centre console houses a model-specific composition of buttons. This includes the Setup switch that enables configuration of the drive system, Drivelogic (transmission), chassis, steering, braking and M xDrive. Different M HYBRID modes can also be selected via the centre console.

The M HYBRID modes sharpen specific elements to set up and tailor the M5 Touring to individual driving preferences. The DYNAMIC and DYNAMIC PLUS modes for example are specifically tailored for the track, with the combustion engine, electric motor and system cooling all networked and configured especially for the unique demands of driving on a circuit.

The new BOOST mode, enabled by a simple long pull of the left gearshift paddle, additionally delivers maximum thrust between the speeds of 30km/h and 150km/h for sudden bursts of acceleration.

The new BMW M5 Touring will showcase an array of advanced driver aid systems, including Driving Assistant Professional and Parking Assistant Professional.

All aspects combine to accentuate the multifaceted and vast range of abilities offered by the new BMW M5 Touring. Its sense of poise and assurance is backed by vast reserves of power that can be summoned at any time while offering abundant rear cargo space.

The M HYBRID system, in alliance with power transmission and chassis technology tuned to the car’s specific performance characteristics, imbue the BMW M5 Touring with peerless straight-line acceleration and cornering prowess.

Production of the all-new BMW M5 Touring will commence in January 2025 at BMW Group Plant Dingolfing – where all previous six generation BMW M5s have been built – with local customer deliveries due through the first quarter of the new year.
