FOR COMPACT SUV BUYERS, Jeep’s Compass has always been worth considering. Now the model has been refreshed and gets more premium cabin appointments.
The new Jeep Compass blends the spirit of the urban lifestyle with those that dream of the road less-travelled (in other words, weekend warrior wannabes). The Jeep Compass has evolved, with enhanced on-board technology, redesigned dashboard, a refined cabin and an impressive suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems as standard across the range.
“Since its launch in 2017, the Jeep Compass has been renowned as the category leader when it comes to off-road capability in the compact SUV segment, and now we’re pairing that capability with advanced technology and a premium interior styling. The comfort you want for your daily commute and the capability to tackle your weekend adventures have found harmony in the new Jeep Compass,” said Tom Noble, Marketing and Communications Director, Jeep Australia.
“The S-Limited offers refinement and true comfort, its off-road capability is uncompromised. The Compass Trailhawk takes off-roading to the next level with increased ground clearance and superior approach and departure angles. The latest range is tailor-made to ensure there is a Jeep Compass for every adventure,” continued Mr Noble.
All-new interior
A complete redesign of the Jeep Compass interior gives the compact SUV a more modern, sophisticated style, consistent with the exterior design.
The updates see an all-encompassing modernisation within the interior, involving the dashboard, central tunnel and door panels, resulting in a more comfortable and spacious cabin, featuring premium materials and a refined finish.
The overlap of surfaces, materials and fabrics give the new dashboard a three-dimensional design with a horizontal ‘three-layer’ development. An elegant central horizontal dashboard panel features ultra-slim air intakes that almost disappear into its layered structure. The controls are seamlessly integrated and easy to reach, as is the connectivity touchscreen that dominates the middle of the dashboard, now in a higher and more ergonomic position.
Improvements in practicality offer a more functional use of space and user experience. The redesigned central tunnel is now in a higher position and offers almost five litres of storage under the central armrest compartment and an additional 2.4-litre compartment next to the new gear lever, to store a mini-tablet or other small accessories. These smart solutions have increased storage compartment space in the Jeep Compass almost three-fold to 4.4 litres.
User convenience extends to the rear with a new tailgate, standard of the Limited, S-Limited and Trailhawk models, which is operated via a kicking motion under the bumper, to allow owners to open their boot with ease.
Updated design
Maintaining its recognisable exterior, the new Jeep Compass has been restyled for a refreshed look, featuring a more sophisticated, modern design, perfectly adapted to its urban character. The front bonnet is now broader, sporting a more athletic appearance achieved by using stylistic elements that develop horizontally, highlighting the vehicle’s breadth and on-road presence.
Horizontal elements emphasise the linearity of the design, while the sculpted surfaces and the three-dimensional effect of the seven-slot grille highlight its dynamism. Compared to its predecessor’s separate fog lamp housing, these components are now integrated into a single broad linear opening in the centre of the front bumper, resulting in a ‘layered’ construction of the front.
The legendary Jeep grille design has been revamped, raising its vertical position and dividing it into two horizontal sections. Standard across the range, the Compass now integrates new full LED headlights featuring a thinner, sleek profile. The LED lights are now available in two different configurations, projector and reflector, giving the new Compass a bolder look. The daytime running lights (DRLs) – now marked out by their subtle elongated form – have also been repositioned and are now built into the main headlights. The lower opening and skid plate are now wider.
The Jeep Compass range now offers three identifiable themes according to the trim level, appealing to urban adventurers and weekend warriors alike. The functional and urban Compass Launch Edition and Compass Limited models feature black bumpers with new 18-inch alloy wheels, while the sporty S-Limited model is elevated with metallic grey finishes, body-colour bumpers and new multi-spoke 19-inch alloy wheels.
The ‘Trail-Rated’ off-road performance of the Compass Trailhawk trim, is embodied with a unique grille treatment, body-colour fog lamp bezels, prominent skid plate and unique 17-inch alloy wheels. The redevelopment of the Compass Trailhawk body has focused on functionality, the bumpers, fog lamps and the camera radar now housed in a higher position for greater protection during off-road adventures.
The full-LED daytime running lights, high beam, low beam and fog lamps enhance the efficiency and safety of the new Jeep Compass. Thanks to the new front lighting, brightness is increased by approximately 100 percent compared to the Xenon headlamps, resulting in the improved perception of depth and lateral lighting. The same treatment can be found in the rear, where the horizontal lines of the front continue and characterise the sleek cut of the taillights, providing a more modern and commanding look.
Intuitive technology
The Jeep Compass introduces the latest generation of Jeep’s Uconnect system to Australia, offering the new 10.1-inch Ultra HD touchscreen display with integrated TomTom navigation for an intuitive user experience. The new Uconnect 5 system is the most advanced infotainment system in Jeep history, with a more powerful, higher-performance processor delivering increased responsiveness. With the new Uconnect system, drivers benefit from an easy-to-use interface to access all the functions available with ‘touch and swipe’ input, with the ability to create their own interface with ‘one-touch access’, allowing instant access to their favourite and frequently used features.
Boasting advanced voice recognition, the latest updates allow owners to control its settings, program the air conditioning and change the radio all via voice control. This feature is integrated into the TomTom navigation of the Jeep Compass, which can be activated hands-free with the wake word “Hey Jeep!”.
The new-generation Uconnect 5 system in the new Jeep Compass features easy-to-use connectivity, with features including:
- 10.1-inch digital touchscreen.
- Multiple user profiles – customisable music preferences, apps, seat position, mirror angles and climate comfort levels, and frequent destinations, plus a ‘Valet’ mode.
- Wireless charging and wireless integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as standard across the range.
- Fully customisable homepage for quick access to frequently used features and one-touch operation.
- TomTom navigation with improved search and predictive text functions and natural voice recognition.
- Customisable radio user experience with new ‘touch and swipe’ mode and the option to create widgets according to preferences.
- New Ultra HD 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, standard on Limited, Trailhawk and S-Limited.
Standard on all trims is the wireless charging pad for easy smartphone charging (at up to 15W). Charging commences by simply placing the device on the pad in front of the gear lever.
Updated Advanced Driver Assistance Systems
The new Jeep Compass offers an advanced suite of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems as standard, suitable for everyday driving needs, with active and passive safety specifications that are further enhanced with innovative technology and refine the interaction between driver, vehicle and road.
These new Advanced Driver Assistance Systems include Traffic Sign Recognition, Intelligent Speed Assist, Drowsy Driver Alert and Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Cyclist Recognition.
- Traffic Sign Recognition: Standard across the range, uses a front-facing camera to detect the speed limit and the related road signs, including those that prohibit overtaking.
- Intelligent Speed Assist: Combines Adaptive Cruise Control and Traffic Sign Recognition, suggesting the driver automatically adjust the speed according to the limits indicated by the road signs. It comes as standard on all versions.
- Drowsy Driver Alert: Tracks vehicle movement and interaction, such as lane deviation and steering-wheel input over time, for driving behaviour consistent with that of a drowsy driver. When certain thresholds are reached, the system responds with audio and/or visual cautions for the driver to pull over. The feature comes standard on all models.
- Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian and Cyclist Recognition: Alerts the driver of the danger and brings the vehicle to a complete stop to avoid collision with a pedestrian or a cyclist (standard on all versions).
Additional protection and safety is provided by the new 360-degree camera, available as a cost option on the S-Limited and standard on the Trailhawk trim. This new system offers a 360-degree view of the vehicle and its surroundings, enhanced by dynamic gridlines displayed on a 10.1-inch digital touchscreen. With four high-definition cameras positioned on the grille, rear-view mirrors and tailgate, the system offers four different views and activates when driving up to 12 km/h.
Forward Collision Warning and LaneSense Departure Warning, Electronic Stability Control (ESC) with Electronic Roll Mitigation (ERM) and front, side and curtain airbags remain standard across the range.
