LIKE MANY COMPANIES, JEEP is moving further into EV territory. Arriving later this year are the new Jeep Compass e-Hybrid and 4xe, with prices starting from $45,990 (plus on road costs).
From the introduction of the Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe in 2023, to the announcement of the brand’s very first battery electric vehicle; the Jeep Avenger, Jeep Compass e-Hybrid and 4xe continues to diversify the range with fuel-efficient powertrains.
Jeep Compass e-Hybrid
Featuring a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol engine coupled with a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a 48V battery, the Jeep Compass e-Hybrid is the first time the Jeep brand ventures into mild hybrid technology, identified with a green coloured ‘e-torque’ badge on the rear of the vehicle.
Jeep Compass e-Hybrid offers class-exclusive capability; travelling under EV conditions at low speeds and while parking (speeds less than 15km/h) and utilising the 48V battery to assist the vehicle with performance when travelling at high speeds.
The Jeep Compass e-Hybrid powertrain seamlessly manages the propulsion system by automatically switching between full electric, hybrid, and internal combustion engines based on factors such as the 48V battery state of charge, liquid-cooled and with 17.5Ah capacity, real-time driving conditions, and other monitored parameters.
This intelligent system ensures the delivery of exceptional performance across various driving scenarios. Whether it’s the smooth and silent full electric propulsion during launch, the efficient hybrid mode for cruising, or the powerful internal combustion engine for acceleration, these vehicles adapt effortlessly to the demands of the road.
The Jeep Compass e-Hybrid is capable of producing 96kW at 5250 rpm and 240Nm at 1560 rpm sent to the front wheels. Impressively, the powertrain only consumes 5.1L/100km and emits 116g/km CO2.
Courtesy of the new propulsion systems, the Jeep Compass e-Hybrid FWD delivers a versatile and relaxing driving experience, with various features allowing the vehicle to move in electric mode including;
- Silent Start: starts the vehicle with no need to turn on the petrol engine, by using an EV pure-electric, silent driving mode;
- Energy Recovery: recovers energy that would otherwise be wasted when the vehicle decelerates (e-Coasting) and during braking (Regenerative Braking);
- Boost & Load Point Shift: ‘e-Boosting’ allows an increase in torque to the wheels from the electric motor that supports the petrol engine; moreover, by taking advantage of the (drive or braking) torque delivered by the electric motor, it is possible to optimise the operating point of the petrol engine; and
- Electric Drive: the vehicle can travel in silence and with zero emissions using only the electric motor, while the petrol engine is turned off.
The new Jeep Compass e-Hybrid can run in various driving scenarios using only the electric motor, and with the petrol engine turned off. This is made possible courtesy of an array of electric operating modes including;
- e-Launch: starts the vehicle using only the electric motor, when starting up or restarting at traffic lights;
- e-Creeping: the electric motor provides the start-up normally seen in electric vehicles, at a speed that can vary from 0 km/h to the equivalent of the petrol engine idling in first gear, or in reverse;
- e-Queueing: the vehicle can keep going in a traffic jam, following a ‘stop and go’ pattern in full-electric mode;
- e-Parking: simplifies parking manoeuvres, which can be carried out using electric propulsion only, to ensure a practical and quiet experience.
Jeep Compass e-Hybrid not only offers unprecedented EV driving behaviour, but also is capable of a greater towing capacity than the existing 2.4-litre Tigershark engine, offering a capacity of 1450kg (braked).
Jeep Compass 4xe
The Jeep Compass 4xe combines a 1.3-litre turbo engine coupled with a six-speed automatic transmission, with an electric motor located on the rear axle powered by an 11.4kWh battery, to offer a balance between performance and emotions, rational usage and dreams of freedom and adventure.
The vehicle is capable of producing 176kW of combined power output. Independently, the internal combustion engine produces 132kW at 5750rpm and 270Nm at 1850rpm, whilst the rear electric motor produces 44kW and 250Nm. By combining the internal combustion engine and the electric motors, the Jeep Compass 4xe guarantees remarkable performance with acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in around 7.3 seconds, a pure electric top speed of 130km/h, rising to 200km/h in hybrid mode.
Jeep Compass 4xe is an ideal car for driving in the city, courtesy of plug-in hybrid technology, offering zero-emissions travel in full-electric mode, with a range of 47.3km. For longer journeys, combined fuel consumption is homologated to 2.1L/100km and in case of extended off-road driving, the two electric motors featuring Powerloop ensure that eAWD traction is always available to take on extreme adventures with peace of mind.
Jeep Compass 4xe models also feature a new six-speed automatic transmission selector, updated Selec-Terrain rotary control with eAWD modes (4WD Lock, 4WD Low, Hill Descent Control) to engage the different driving modes. Along with Auto, Snow, Mud & Sand, and Rock mode, there is the new Sport mode, for enhanced throttle response and steering. In addition, Jeep Compass 4xe is also capable of all the EV features & capabilities of its sister e-Hybrid powertrain.
Jeep Compass 4xe can be identified through its 4xe badging, blue accents on ‘JEEP’ and ‘COMPASS’ badging, as well as the Type 2 Smart Charging Port located at the rear of the vehicle. Boasting a 7.4kW maximum onboard charger, the vehicle can be charged utilising both simple domestic AC charging as well as public AC charging:
- Mode 2: Domestic charging mode is supported by a mode 2 charging cable that comes standard and stores in the boot. The cable enables charging up to 13A current, thus enabling charging at a max rate of 3kW.
- Mode 3: provides AC charging at a maximum rate of 7.4kW (single-phase) and is supported by the standard mode 3 charging cable. This cable enables charging up to 32A current and can be used both at home with an EV wallbox or at public AC charging stations.
The Type 2 Smart Charging Port gives immediate feedback on the charging status and the ability to manage set charging schedules or commence immediate charging.
E-Save is managed through a dedicated button switch on the central console. This feature allows to charge the battery (Battery Charge – active E-Save) or to maintain the battery charge (Battery Save – passive E-Save) using the internal combustion engine while driving.
Regenerative braking allows kinetic energy to be recovered during all deceleration or braking phases. It is always active regardless of the driving mode (internal combustion engine or electric motor) to maximise energy recovery when the throttle and brake pedals are released. The energy is stored in the battery pack instead of being dissipated as heat on the brake discs. The conventional brake system is used to stop the car in the event of emergency braking or when travelling at very low speeds.
