Ford releases prices and details for performance models

FORD HAS ALWAYS BEEN recognised for its performance models, especially in smaller cars like the Fiesta and Focus.

Now, Ford has released pricing and details for the hot hatch Fiesta ST and another of its performance models (although in a very different category), a special edition of the Mustang.

Ford refreshed performance lin-eup for 2022, includes the most stylish and technically advanced ST twins (Focus ST and Fiesta ST) and the 2022 edition of the iconic Mustang sports car. The updated Fiesta ST is due to arrive in showrooms in Q1, 2022, while Focus ST and Mustang are due to follow in Q2, 2022.

The Focus ST blends track-day performance with everyday driving fun, and is one of the most versatile performance cars on the market.

The updated Fiesta ST features a range of sports technologies that enhance power and performance, cornering and agility, making it a responsive and engaging sporty hatchback.

The Mustang offers a unique combination of classic style and exhilarating performance, with the fresh 2022 Mustang GT California Special being added to the local range.

Ford Focus ST

The updated 2022MY Focus ST features a redesigned front-end with a new, and prominent, larger grille that now proudly houses the Ford blue oval badge.

The front headlamps are now more aggressively styled than previous versions, with the daytime running lights wrapping around the headlamps to create a signature light graphic. Likewise, the Focus ST receives a new 10-spoke ‘torqued’ alloy wheel design. These new subtle design elements combine to create a bold exterior design that further emphasises the high-performance character of the Focus ST line-up.

Connectivity and Technology 

The 2022 Focus ST line-up features Ford’s latest in connectivity technologies with the addition of a 13.2 in central touchscreen powered by the brand-new SYNC 4 infotainment system. With its widescreen aspect ratio and intuitive interface, drivers can easily access any application, information or control they need. The new interface incorporates controls for functions such as heating and ventilation, allowing for a cleaner and less cluttered centre console.

The new SYNC 4 system also enables wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility which, in combination with wireless charging as standard, allows for a smooth smartphone integration experience.

FordPass Connect allows a selection of convenient connected services to be controlled remotely using the FordPass app. Customers can operate Door Lock/Unlock, Vehicle Locator, and Remote Start with Cabin Pre-Conditioning, and check their Vehicle Status which includes fuel level, alarm status, tyre pressures and more.

New technology that now comes standard with the 2022 Focus ST include the newly designed full LED headlamps featuring integrated fog lamps and cornering lights, whilst the more premium Focus ST X offers the latest in advanced lighting technologies with the addition of new Dynamic Pixel LED headlamps. Capable of adjusting and manoeuvring the light beam to suit driving conditions, the Dynamic Pixel LED headlamps provide an array of intelligent benefits including glare-free high beam, camera-based dynamic bending, bad-weather lighting, and sign-based adjustability.

Blind Spot Assist has also been added to the extensive suite of driver assistance technologies. Building on the functionality of Blind Spot Information System, Blind Spot Assist can smartly apply counter-steering and discourage a lane change if a potential collision is detected. The new Intersection Assist feature monitors the road ahead for potential collisions with oncoming vehicles when turning at an intersection and can apply the brakes when travelling at up to 30km/h to help prevent or mitigate accidents.

Performance 

The 2022 Focus ST line-up continues with the high performance 2.3-litre EcoBoost engine, outputting 206kw and 420Nm of torque. Innovative anti-lag technology keeps the throttle open when the driver lifts off the accelerator pedal, ensuring immediate power is delivered in Sport and Track modes.

Focus ST also continues to offer class-leading driving dynamics, with the advanced Electronic Limited Slip Differential (eLSD) enhancing cornering stability and sharpening steering response to extract and plant the ST’s EcoBoost power to the tarmac. Transmission choices will please every performance driver, with the 7-speed automatic transmission available on the ST and ST X, and the engaging 6-speed manual gearbox available on the ST model for the most discerning driving enthusiasts.

The new heated Ford Performance seats are standard across the Focus ST line-up for both the driver and front passenger, featuring 14-way power adjustment including 4-way lumbar support.

  • Focus ST X – the more premium option available in automatic transmission only

In addition to the standard content on the ST, the ST X provides drivers with further luxuries and driving refinement, including the addition of panorama roof, Dynamic Pixel LED headlamps, heads-up-display (HUD), 19-inch alloy wheels, and adaptive sports suspension.

The Focus ST X hatch is available in six exterior colours. A new black roof with matching black mirrors caps will be standard across all the Focus ST paint options, excluding Agate Black. Focus ‘ST X’ comes standard with panorama roof and body colour mirror caps:

Ford Fiesta ST

The updated 2022 Fiesta ST boasts a redesigned front-end featuring a more prominent, larger grille and new front splitter featuring Ford Performance branding. The subtle changes provide a sportier look with the new grey-surround grille featuring the Ford badge.

Performance and technology

The updated Fiesta ST is the most responsive, engaging and fun-to-drive Fiesta ST ever, now featuring 320Nm of torque (previously 290Nm) and a range of innovative sports technologies that enhance power and performance, cornering and agility. Fiesta ST provides versatility from the school run to the racetrack.

Offered exclusively as a 5-door with 6-speed manual transmission, the 2022 Fiesta ST comes standard with a Performance Pack including launch control, helping drivers achieve consistent fast-standing-starts on track, whilst supported by a dedicated display on the new full digital instrument cluster. The mechanical limited slip differential optimises cornering grip and the Ford-patented force vectoring springs deliver sharper turn-in, better rear-end responsiveness and a more connected feel.

The new Ford Performance seats are standard for both the driver and front passenger featuring 12-way adjustment including 4-way lumbar support. They are purposely sculpted to secure the driver in hitting the perfect apex corner after corner.

The Fiesta ST now features advanced Matrix LED headlamps combining the luminosity brilliance of LED technology and the vehicle’s intelligence to adjust and manoeuvre the light beam to suit the driving conditions. Bad weather light functions are triggered when the vehicle sensors detect a low-speed manoeuvring attempt or the activation of windscreen wipers, and automatically adjust the beam pattern to help the driver see more clearly.

Glare-Free High Beam detects oncoming traffic and creates a ‘glare-free spot’ within the beam pattern, that would otherwise shine in the eyes of other road-users. The technology enables increased use of high beam to maximise night-time driving visibility while helping to reduce the risk of dazzling other drivers. 

The 12.3-inch fully configurable digital instrument cluster allows drivers to personalise and display a wealth of information such as Performance Shift Lights and Launch Control. The cluster incorporates curved upper edges for seamless integration with the Fiesta ST interior. The 24-bit true colour digital instrument cluster generates detailed, high definition, more intuitive images. Icons are displayed in the full colour spectrum, making them brighter and easier to read than previous Fiesta STs.

The Fiesta ST combines FordPass Connect, wireless charging pad, and the 12.3-inch digital cluster to make it the most-connected Fiesta ST ever.

The new Mustang special edition will maintain interest

Ford Mustang

The 2022MY Mustang range welcomes the addition of updated Track Apps software which enables Line Lock function for track application.

This electronic line-lock will be a standard feature on all 2022MY Mustangs, having previously been unavailable in Australia.

In addition, the California Special will be available for the first time to Australian customers.

Understated badging, for a change

California Special adds excitement

Since the first-generation Mustang, the California Special has represented a uniquely regionalized appearance package with special styling cues. The updated 2022 Mustang GT California Special continues this tradition.

Based on the 2022 Mustang GT fastback and convertible models, the latest California Special Appearance Package references the original version’s blacked-out grille, lower bodyside accent stripe and rear fender scoop.

The heritage-inspired GT/CS side stripe trademark traces from the front fender to the signature rear fender scoop. A California Special badge in Ebony Black and Race Red script decorates the boot lid, while the honeycomb grille with GT/CS badge provides a unique look. A larger front splitter from the GT Performance Package underscores the icon’s handling prowess.

A performance rear wing is available for the fastback model, while the spoiler is deleted for the California Special convertible.

The California Special wears unique five-spoke 19-inch painted machined wheels. Interior appointments include rich black Miko suede door trim inserts and suede-trimmed seats with the embossed “GT/CS” logo and red contrast stitching.

The instrument panel is finished in carbon hex aluminium with a signature California Special script badge on the passenger side.

Mustang looks better in more subdued colours, but it’s only an opinion
