New car prices continue to fluctuate

WE SEEM TO BE IN A state of flux when it comes to car prices. Barely a week seems to go by when Telsa doesn’t announce another price change (usually a cut) and there is an ongoing battle for the crown of cheapest EV on the Australian market.

Now Chery has just lowered the entry price again with the price of its Omoda 5 small SUV range being cut by a whopping $6000 with the introduction of a cheaper FX variant.

This means buyers can be in an Omoda 5 from as little as $27,990 (driveaway).

It comes with cloth-faced upholstery (which many buyers prefer anyway) with synthetic leather trimmings, 17-inch alloys, a six-speaker sound system and halogen headlights. The entry-level FX is still fitted with twin 10.25-inch screens (one for multimedia and the other a digital driver’s display) and the “Hello Chery” voice recognition system.

What the FX does without is acoustic glass, synthetic leather upholstery, soft touch door cards, dual zone climate control, eight-speaker stereo and a wireless charger, all of which are standard on the mid-range BX which starts at $33,990.

Like all Omoda 5s, the FX gets a 1.5-litre turbo petrol four-cylinder developing 108kW and 275Nm, mated to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic.

At this price point, the Omoda 5 undercuts the base model Mitsubishi ASX GS, but is still more expensive than the base MG ZST Core and GWM Haval Jolion Premium.
