Range Rover Sport adds petrol mild hybrid engine to range

THE RANGE ROVER SPORT HAS GAINED a new petrol in-line six powertrain, which will further enhance its appeal as the ultimate luxury performance SUV.

With the strong trend towards petrol in the Australian market in recent times, the new P400 inline six-cylinder powertrain will further enhance customer choice for Range Rover Sport. The powertrain will feature in both SE and HSE specification.

The smooth and responsive new six-cylinder unit has an innovative combination of advanced features, including the introduction of an electric supercharger to deliver immediate power response. Able to spool fully in just 0.5 seconds at up to 65,000rpm to maximum boost pressure, the new technology virtually eliminates turbo lag.

Supported by a twin-scroll turbocharger and Continuous Variable Valve Lift, which boost power and help the engine breathe with maximum efficiency, the design of the all-new six-cylinder engine optimises performance and fuel economy as well as reducing emissions – all with customary Range Rover poise and refinement.

The clever set-up is based around an all-new Start-Stop system that switches off when stationary and pairs the new 3.0-litre engine with an electric motor. This allows the system to harvest energy whilst the vehicle is decelerating and store it in a 48V battery.  This energy can then be re-deployed through torque-assist, reducing C02 emissions by reducing the work load on the engine.

“In-line six-cylinder engines are inherently better balanced than V6 designs and our all-new Ingenium unit builds on that promise to optimise efficiency in all operating conditions. Advanced features, including an electric supercharger, ensure distinctive Range Rover Sport performance and responses, while the intelligent MHEV system harvests energy to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions,” explains Nick Rogers, Executive Director of Product Engineering, Jaguar Land Rover

All the engines available play to the Range Rover Sport’s high-performance character, with the new P400 petrol powering the luxury performance SUV from 0-100km/h in just 5.9 seconds. With an impressive torque output of 550Nm, strong responses remain at the core of the Range Rover Sport experience and, with CO2 emissions from just 236g/km and fuel economy of up to 8.7L/100 km, customers gain traditional V8 petrol performance with six-cylinder efficiency.

Strong performance is backed up by an engaging drive that strikes a fine balance between dynamism and comfort. The Range Rover Sport’s advanced all-wheel drive and air suspension both constantly adapt and respond to road conditions, providing driver feedback and involvement, while retaining the superior refinement that customers expect. Lightweight aluminium construction is a key factor behind the Range Rover Sport’s agile handling and dynamic responses.
