New Mitsubishi ASX gains new entry model

MITSUBISHI’S SMALL SUV, THE ASX, has always been popular with buyers, not surprising because it combines practical design, a sensible size and, like most Mitsubishi products, very good value for money (as we see it, Mitsubishis are usually the best buy in each of the categories in which they compete).

Mitsubishi has announced 23MY updates for the popular ASX.

“ASX has always been a popular choice for those seeking a versatile and stylish small SUV,” said Mitsubishi Motors Australia CEO, Shaun Westcott.

“With the new ASX GS offering a fresh entry into the Mitsubishi range, and several key specification updates for other variants, we feel ASX remains a strong choice in the competitive small SUV segment,” he said.

The 23MY ASX range will arrive in dealerships from December, 2022.

New entry: the Mitsubishi ASX GS

The new ASX GS plays a vital role for Mitsubishi as a fresh entry point into the brand.

Offering the choice of five-speed manual or CVT transmissions, the ASX GS is powered by a responsive 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine. Powering the front wheels, this engine generates 110kW and 197Nm, while using 7.6L/100km (ADR 81/02) in CVT form (manual: 7.7L/100km).

Featuring colour-coded door handles mirrors and rear garnish, a rear spoiler with integrated LED stop lamp LED Headlamps silver front grille and 16-inch covered steel wheels, the GS offers its own distinctive take on the ASX range’s stylish exterior.

Inside, the ASX GS sports comfortable black fabric seat upholstery and an array of Piano Black and chrome trim highlights with a grey headlining. The second-row offers 60/40 split-fold seat and there are two ISOFIX and three tether anchors to fit a wide array of child restraints.

An 8.0-inch Smartphone Link central touchscreen display allows occupants to interact with the ASX GS’s four-speaker audio system, which features wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, along with dual USB ports, DAB+ and Bluetooth audio capability with voice control to ensure constant connectivity.

From a safety perspective, the new ASX GS features:

  • Airbags: driver, front passenger, driver’s knee, side and curtain
  • Anti-lock braking system
  • Brake Override System
  • Electronic Brake Distribution
  • Emergency Stop Signal function
  • Emergency Brake Assist system
  • Forward Collision Mitigation system
  • Hill Start Assist
  • Rear View Camera
It isn’t easy telling the different trims apart (this is the ES)

Elevated Spec: The updated ASX ES

For 23MY, the ASX ES adopts several of the key safety enhancements seen in the ES ADAS edition.

The 23MY ASX ES gains rain sensing wipers, dusk sensing headlamps, automatic high beam, front LED fog lamps and reverse sensors over the 22MY specification.

ASX ES also features the additional specification over the GS:

  • Full-automatic air conditioning with second-row vents
  • Silver 18-inch alloy wheels

Safety additions include:

  • Auto high beam
  • Dusk sensing headlamps
  • Rain sensing automatic wipers
  • Reverse sensors

As a result of the ES’s upgraded specification, the ASX ES ADAS grade is discontinued.

New audio for ASX MR and LS grades

Both the ASX MR and LS grades welcome a six-speaker audio system as standard equipment, up from the previous four-speaker unit.

The distinctive MR features several bespoke elements, including Black finish 18-inch alloy wheels, black exterior door mirrors and grille.

  • Smart key with one touch start

ASX LS also retains additional standard equipment over the ES grade, including:

  • Black roof rails
  • Illuminated vanity mirrors
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel and gear shift
  • Privacy glass; rear, rear door and quarter windows

  • Lane Change Assist
  • Lane Departure Warning
  • Rear Cross-Traffic Alert

Featuring a larger 2.4-litre petrol engine generating 123kW and 222Nm, the sporty GSR is solely available with the CVT and exclusively features paddle shift. This drivetrain provides smooth response and brisk acceleration, while consuming only 7.9L/100km (ADR 81/02). CO2 is rated at 186g/km CO2.

ASX GSR also gains the following over the LS grade:

  • 18-inch Black finish alloy wheels
  • Aluminium brake pedals
  • Black exterior door mirrors, radiator grille and rear spoiler
  • Microsuede/synthetic leather seat trim with red stitching
Interior is practical, rather than inspired (this is the GS)
